How To Create a Healthy Work/Life Balance in the New Year
I’m sure that many of you have had moments where you feel like you don’t have enough time to get everything done that you’d like to. It is so easy to feel burnt out and then really lose your energy and focus.
How can we avoid this?
No one wants to feel that way but sometimes it is inevitable, this sudden rush of exhaustion and frustration that comes out of nowhere. With technology advancing the way that it has, your job is a lot more accessible to you at any given moment than it was 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. This makes the work/life balance even more difficult to maintain.
Next Year Can Be Your Best Year Ever!
Let go of trying to be perfect in all areas of your life. You are a human being who isn’t always perfect, isn’t going to perform like a machine would. Give yourself a break, don’t get down on yourself for mistakes and imperfections at work or at home. Being too tough on yourself will only propel you faster towards burnout. Perfectionism is often learned at a young age and becomes much more difficult to obtain as you become older. “As life gets more expanded it’s very hard, both neurologically and psychologically, to keep that habit of perfection going,” says Marilyn Puder-York, PhD who has written a book on this very thing.
Make sure you’re not always plugged in. Technology has improved our lives in many ways but we are not able to easily disconnect and separate ourselves when we get home at the end of the day. Doing little things like not responding to a work email while you’re at your kid’s sports game is a small step in disconnecting. When you are able to step back and separate yourself from work then you will better show up for yourself and the people that you love.
Monitor yourself. Keep an eye on your sleep, your diet, and your mood. It is very easy for people to suffer from burnout, be constantly fatigued and start to have worsening health conditions. When you’re tired, all aspects of your life become affected. We have written numerous blog posts on sleep and how to maximize your resting time. Getting enough high-quality sleep is one of the best things you can do for your body.
Learn how to say no. We all become so conditioned to taking on more than we can handle for the sake of others. Some of us know this better than others. Understand what your priorities are both at home and at work and then shorten your to-do list. By taking a few things off your plate, you will have more time in the day to take care of yourself. This allows you to get everything done efficiently, without being detrimental to your health. When you stop taking on tasks out of guilt or a false sense of obligation, you’ll have more time for activities that are meaningful to you and bring joy to your life.
Make time for healthy activities, both physical exercise and restorative activities. When you jog or take a kickboxing class or lift weights, you release endorphins that elevate your mood and expel stress from your body. Yoga and meditation are also fantastic things to incorporate into your week. A mixture of those along with more vigorous physical activity will be very beneficial to your health. “When I talk about balance, not everything has to be the completion and achievement of a task, it also has to include self-care so that your body, mind and soul are being refreshed,” says Puder-York. Minor adjustments can lead to a major ripple effect of beneficial changes that influence all aspects of your life.
At the end of the day it is essential to avoid burnout.
