9 Tips and Tricks to Keeping your Digestive Tract Healthy and Happy

Many people don’t realize that our immune system mostly lives in our gut, which makes digestive health so incredibly important. Especially now!

Everywhere we look there is readily available fast food and other “quick instant gratification” meals and sometimes it’s hard to give our bodies everything they need, everyday.

So, if we can’t always eat right then we need to make up for it in other ways to stay healthy! No matter how old you are, your body will thank you!

How To Improve Gut Health

Just in case you need a little extra help, let’s talk about some of the ways that you can improve your internal function and detox your body from the things it doesn’t want or need.

Eat REAL foods

At the end of the day, the best thing you can do for your body is to eat whole foods that come from your garden, your local farmers market, or organic retailers. Foods without trans fats, processed sugars and high levels of sodium.

The more you can create meals based around raw fruits, veggies, and whole grains the happier your brain and body will be. By purchasing from local farmers markets, fruit/veggie stands, or organic retailers you are also keeping your money local and supporting farmers.

Consume plenty of FIBER

Fiber is essential for the health of your gut and your overall digestion. Foods with high fiber content such as; Lentils, black beans, raspberries, apples, broccoli, brussel sprouts, quinoa and almonds keep your digestive tract running smoothly.

Keep your body HYDRATED

Low amounts of water consumption lead to constipation, brain fog and bloating/cramping. Most of our water has a very low TDS (total dissolved solids) which account for all of the naturally occuring minerals found in water.

Our Trace Mineral packs include all of the minerals you need to stay hydrated and on top of your game.

Limit foods high in FAT

There are so many food options available to us that are high in bad fats and very processed ones at that. Healthy fats, such as the ones found in avocados are great for us, especially when paired with high fiber foods.

However, your average cheeseburger is where things start to become less healthy and begin to create inflammation in the gut!

Choose LEAN meats when you can

Your standard ground beef has around 30% fat content. Your lean ground beef has no more than 17% fat. This is more around what our bodies should be consuming.

Some great “lean meat” alternatives to include in your diet that still provide lots of protein are halibut, skinless turkey breast, skinless chicken thighs, tofu (for the non-meat eaters), etc…

With beef the words “loin” and “round” indicate lean meat. So a sirloin or tenderloin are great options if you have a craving for steak.

Probiotics are the healthy bacteria already found in your digestive tract. Due to the diet of most people, we are lacking these bacterias. Finding a probiotic supplement will help your body process and distribute nutrients where they need to go to keep your body working at its most efficient.

If you aren’t a supplement taker, kefir and low-fat greek yogurt are excellent sources of probiotics. Prebiotics act as a “food” for the probiotics. Prebiotics can be found in foods such as bananas, onions, oats, and legumes.

Eat on a SCHEDULE

Consistently eating your meals and snacks at the same time everyday helps your body develop a digestive cycle. Knowing when it will be fed helps regulate your gut.

We are creatures of habit, our food habits are no different. If you are always eating breakfast at 8am, your body will be accustomed to digesting at a regular time every morning.

Cut out BAD habits

If you are regularly smoking cigarettes, consuming copious amounts of alcohol or caffeine you will throw your body off it’s natural rhythm.

These things not only disrupt your digestion, they can also lead to problems such as kidney stones, stomach ulcers, acid reflux and heartburn.

 Implement a regular EXERCISE routine

When we move, our bodies move, our food moves through our bodies. By having 30-60 minutes of habitual exercise, we provide a way to help our food, water and other things move through our bodies and process naturally. You can avoid constipation and maintain a healthy weight through movement.

Our bodies are so very important and doing everything we can to take care of them is essential to a healthy and happy lifestyle.

If anything seems overwhelming, take it slow. Find one small change to start with and implement that in your daily life to see where it takes you.

You will be surprised how quickly you can make a difference 😉
